How it works.
From October to March the Icelandic sun is too low for your skin to make vitamin D, which contributes to the normal function of the immune system and the maintenance of normal bones. Nordic Total combines vitamin D3 with ten more vitamins and minerals in active forms, plus taurine, citicoline, TMG, hyaluronic acid and lutein. Four capsules a day.
- D3 and K2
- Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system and muscles, and vitamins D and K to the maintenance of normal bones. In the Icelandic winter your skin makes no vitamin D.
- Five B vitamins
- Folate, B12, B6 and riboflavin contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and biotin to normal skin and hair. Folate and B6 come in their active forms.
- Four minerals
- Magnesium: normal muscle function and less tiredness. Zinc and iodine: normal cognitive function. Selenium: protection of cells from oxidative stress.
- Five longevity compounds
- Taurine, citicoline, TMG, hyaluronic acid and lutein, otherwise bought in separate jars. They are studied in ageing research; no health claims apply.
Sixteen ingredients, and what each does for you.
First what the ingredient does for you, then what it is. The vitamins and minerals carry authorised EU health claims at these doses. The longevity compounds do not; they are described as the research stands.
Vitamins
- Vitamin D320 µg (400% NRV)Immune system, bones, teeth and musclesVitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system, the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function, and normal absorption of calcium. Your skin makes it in sunlight, but not in the Icelandic winter.
- Vitamin K2 (MK-7)100 µg (133% NRV)Bones and normal blood clottingVitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and to normal blood clotting. MK-7 activates osteocalcin, the protein that binds calcium in bone, and stays in the blood for days.
- Folate (methylfolate, 5-MTHF)165 µg (83% NRV)Less tiredness, immune system and mindFolate contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, the normal function of the immune system, normal psychological function and normal homocysteine metabolism. Methylfolate is the form your cells use directly.
- Vitamin B128 µg (320% NRV)Nervous system, red blood cells and less tirednessVitamin B12 contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system, normal red blood cell formation and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It is found almost only in animal foods.
- Vitamin B6 (P5P)0.8 mg (57% NRV)Mind, immune system and less tirednessVitamin B6 contributes to normal psychological function, the normal function of the immune system and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. P5P is the active form, used by more than a hundred enzymes.
- Riboflavin (B2)0.8 mg (57% NRV)Energy, vision, skin and cell protectionRiboflavin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, the maintenance of normal vision and skin, and the protection of cells from oxidative stress. It carries electrons in the cell's power plants, the mitochondria.
- Biotin (B7)20 µg (40% NRV)Hair, skin and energyBiotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and skin and to normal energy-yielding metabolism. It helps the enzymes that process fat, carbohydrate and protein.
Minerals
- Magnesium (magnesium taurate)93 mg (25% NRV)Muscles, bones and less tirednessMagnesium contributes to normal muscle function, the maintenance of normal bones and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Muscle fibres need it to relax after contracting.
- Zinc5 mg (50% NRV)Thinking, immune system, skin, hair and visionZinc contributes to normal cognitive function, the normal function of the immune system and the maintenance of normal skin, hair, nails and vision. It is part of several hundred enzymes.
- Selenium35 µg (64% NRV)Cell protection, immune system and thyroidSelenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, the normal function of the immune system and the thyroid, and the maintenance of normal hair and nails.
- Iodine75 µg (50% NRV)Thinking, thyroid and energyIodine contributes to normal cognitive function, the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal energy-yielding metabolism. Thyroid hormones set the pace of metabolism in every cell.
Longevity compounds, otherwise bought on their own
- Taurine1,000 mgStudied in ageing researchPresent in large amounts in the heart, muscles, eyes and brain, where it helps regulate cell volume and calcium balance. Blood levels are lower in older people. Controlled trials in humans are still lacking.
- Citicoline300 mgBuilding material for cell membranes, the brain's tooSupplies choline and cytidine, which cells use to build their membranes. It is studied in relation to energy metabolism in the ageing brain.
- TMG (betaine)400 mgMethyl donor, works alongside folate and B12Supplies methyl groups to the same cycle in which folate and vitamin B12 work, and clearing nicotinamide from NAD+ uses methyl groups too. The body gets betaine from beetroot, spinach and whole grains.
- Hyaluronic acid120 mgBinds water in skin and connective tissueA long sugar chain the body makes itself, found in skin, joint fluid and connective tissue. Less is measured in the skin with age, and researchers study whether it reaches the skin when taken by mouth.
- Lutein5 mgCollects at the centre of the retinaA yellow pigment from green leafy vegetables and egg yolk that the body cannot make. It collects in the macula of the retina, where researchers study its role.
More ingredients are not better.
Some powder drinks count 70 to 90 ingredients. The number says little about the benefit: an ingredient only helps if it has documented effects and comes in a dose large enough to matter. Nordic Total is built on that rule.
